Architectural Record
The assignment was to take the venerable and prestigious magazine and design 1) a new logo that updated but retained its refined aesthetic; and b) a cover in keeping with the look and sensibility of the magazine. First, the logo. I decided on an "architectural" look, combining the "a" and the "r" and letting the name of the magazine be the negative space in the "a." For the cover, I decided on a picture that included the "spanning the ages" subhead in its very image. I made it b/w so the one color used would "pop." The font combination of Futura and the great serif font, Questa, kept a clean, but elegant combination that read great. I kept a lot of white space to maintain the refined look of the magazine. Overall, the assignment called the redesign update the magazine without "cheapening" it. I think that was accomplished.
