Never Let Me Go

The brief was to update the classic literary novel with a
tone-appropriate design

A literary "horror" story. It's about (SPOILER ALERT) kids growing up in an English boarding school who very slowly realize they are clones born to be spare body parts for their "originals." So as they get older, they will have to undergo surgical "donations" and eventually die. However, in the beginning of the novel, they have no idea and live in an idyllic boarding school, go to class and enjoy making art to give away to others.

For the first cover, I used the idea of donating parts of yourself, by literally cutting out pieces of the title. For the second cover, I juxtaposed the innocence of childhood drawings being hung up with the subtle hint of horror of what the book is really about.

For the third and fourth covers, I took the idea of using the art "donations" further, using the art vertically and using different type treatments. I used "peaceful" swirling blue colors to accentuate the false feeling of safety the children, offsetting the horror even further.
